So I’d have a mace that’s worth one thousand gold in the current market. Blizzard offers the ability to buy gold like Zynga, and all of a sudden my mace is gone, everybody else has tons of gold and I’m left with a bit of chump change unless I spend my minimum wage check on some fake money. The only thing to counter that is buying from NPC characters to keep the amount of money in the system and inflation down. It wouldn’t be able to cope. People who knew others could buy gold would jack up the price of their already overpriced items, people not willing to spend money on gold would suffer and it would just be terrible.

Keeping it a black market is a smart move really. Because WoW is a simplified version of a real life economy, big changes can throw it out of whack. Sort of like… bail out checks. I have a billion gold market and decide to pump infinite gold into it in exchange for a few dollars cash.

I’d look at gold farming like money printing. It’s great for people who don’t want to earn it and just want what they’re going to buy, but it does harm the economy. It’s kind of a fascinating topic.

Mind you, I would like to buy the gold. I played the game for fun, I didn’t even like raids. I have fantastic stories about how I used my rogue to overcome 10+ levels higher than me in arenas for the treasure chests. I would never even dream about grinding for levels, let alone money. But if I needed an item or wanted something in particular like a cool horse or something, I’d have probably bought the gold for it.

Do you do any console gaming? I’m pretty much exclusively console now except for StarCraft II. I’m just not blown away buy man PC shooters today.

If you’re a PC gamer, I see what you did there…

I have good memories of CS on the PC. Back in high school I took a Cisco networking class and our instructor would give us 1 hour to set up a network to a specific spec sheet. If we got the network up in time we could then play whatever game we wanted over the LAN. Goooood times.
